Hilda’s Story: A Full Circle of Kindness

In 2021, The Centre for Continuing Education Wangaratta proudly honoured Hilda Watson for 20 years of dedicated service with the Community Visitors Scheme (now the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme). She also received special recognition for her commitment

Hilda’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and community. Born in Germany during World War II, she faced early hardship — losing her mother young and growing up in an orphanage before being adopted at age 12.

She later migrated to Australia, where she worked as a nurse and raised four children on a farm near Wangaratta with her husband, a war veteran. Despite language barriers and rural isolation, Hilda found joy in music and joined choirs that performed at local nursing homes.

This sparked her passion for volunteering. Through the Community Visitors Scheme, Hilda brought comfort and companionship to elderly residents — offering friendship, conversation, and thoughtful gifts like homemade jams and knitted scarves.

Even after facing personal loss, including the passing of two husbands within six months, Hilda continued to give her time and heart to others.

Now, in a beautiful full-circle moment, Hilda is a recipient of the program she served for so long. A volunteer visits her regularly, offering the same warmth and companionship she once gave to others.

Hilda’s story reminds us that kindness has a way of coming back when we need it most — and that community connections can span generations.

Her legacy continues to inspire us all.
