A new drug and alcohol facility for Wangaratta – fabulous news!

Beyond Ice

WANGARATTA’S much anticipated drug and alcohol residential rehabilitation facility – the first of its kind funded by the State Government in the region – will be located at the former Ovens College site in Greta Road.

Minister for Mental Health Martin Foley made the announcement in Wangaratta on Wednesday afternoon before members of the Local Drug Action Team and North East Family Support (Drugs and Alcohol), Mayor Ken Clarke and senior council staff.

In My Own Words by Tanya Baylis

Stories from the classroom

Tanya BaylisTanya completed our 26 week Getting There course.

I must admit I was a bit nervous coming in on the first day of class as I am usually a shy person and I didn’t know what to expect. At first we had about 8 people in the class but over time 3 people left and we only had 5 at the end.

When I first met our teacher Nicola I thought she was very nice which helped to make me feel more at ease. If I ever had a problem with anything she was always a great help, not just with me but with everyone in the class.

We got the chance to design a community kitchen garden which was different to anything I have ever done before.

Some of the classwork felt like we were actually back in school but there were also some fun things that we did. A couple of times we even all got to go and coffee with Nicola which was nice. There was also a time when we made nachos in class for lunch. A few things I did struggle with but either Nicola or one of my classmates would help me.

Today is our last day of the course and I am going to feel a bit lost not coming in to class each week. I have enjoyed coming in to class 2 days a week and doing the Getting There course. It got me out of the house and kept my mind active.
