Welcome to The Centre

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2019.

Last year was a huge year for The Centre. We cemented our delivery in Seymour and Broadford, we offered courses in Baranduda for the first time and were overwhelmed by the response plus we partnered with a range of local Community Houses all over North East Victoria.

This year we will be working even closer with Community and Neighbourhood Houses as well as a range service providers down the Hume corridor from Wodonga to Wallan, Mt Beauty, Bright, Mansfield to Yea to deliver Accredited training and short courses locally in your community where you live and around your lives.

We want to support community education and we hope you do too. Contact your local Community House or Neighbourhood House to find out how they can help you.

The Centre has a range of courses to help you gain employment. Our courses give you the skills and knowledge to become qualified and our work placements give you practical on the job experience you can put on your CV right away.

Work placement during the course is a good way to develop relationships with prospective employers – many of our learners obtain employment before fully completing the course.

If you would like a course guide posted to you please contact us or phone 03 5721 0200 and we will send one out.

We also have a smaller guide just for our courses in Wallan, Broadford, Kilmore and Seymour.

Released soon.

We look forward to seeing you in one of our courses in 2019.

Be inspired by your stories

We often receive stories from our students who have achieved amazing things in their lives through education. This is the story of one of our students overcoming life’s obstacles to achieve their goals.

I started a new career at 55!

At the age of 53 I looked at my life and wondered what had gone wrong, my life had fallen in a hole despite many years of hard work. I was past
middle age, divorced with two teenagers, living below the poverty line and at risk of losing my home.

By age 55 and after two years in survival mode, I enrolled in a Cert III Individual Support (Aged Care) at a local TAFE and things started to pick
up. Through a friend made in the course, I was offered work providing personal care to high needs client in their home. I also set up a sole trader business cleaning holiday cottages locally.

The Cert IV Disability at The Centre offered credit transfers for many of my previous competencies, so I was able to complete the course within six months. For a second time I was offered work through a contact made during the course, less personal care and more disability support this time.

With two jobs in hand, I went on student placement and as a result was offered a third role, permanent casual disability support in a residential
care setting. I have more work than I need, and have heard similar observations from colleagues.

Three years post divorce, I have been offered three out of the last four disability jobs I have applied for. I have a steady income doing work that
has very flexible hours, is varied, responsible and interesting.
It’s been a better outcome than I could have imagined.

Certificate IV in Disability offers a range of opportunities. I moved into the technical medical side of care but there is work available that is less ‘hands on’ such as working in support coordination, day programs, advocacy and program auditing.

Find out how education can change your life. Visit our website or give us a call to have a chat about your personal circumstances to our customer service team and they may help steer you into a new career visit https://www.thecentre.vic.edu.au/ to find out more.
