Janelle Boynton – the importance of a thriving community sector for economic development.
When Janelle Boynton (nee Marsden) moved from St Kilda to Porepunkah neither she nor her husband Kel really imagined how far they would develop the winery. Despite her transformation from an urban Project Manager to a mother of two young children with a busy hands-on role in the winery and in the regional tourism sector, Janelle has brought a new aspect to driving community engagement and high impact outcomes.
Janelle was born in Wangaratta and studied at Deakin University, and then went on to complete an honours in Italy and Masters of Architecture. Janelle and Kel affectionately refer to themselves as “the Winemaker who builds and the Architect who drinks”. During 2006 Janelle purchased the 50% of the winery that Kel had sold to business partners a few years before. Now Janelle does the “inside jobs” – Marketing, Sales, Finance and HR and Kel the “outside jobs” – Viticulture and Winemaking, at Boynton’s Feathertop Winery.
Janelle is a strong networker and excellent communicator with a focus on collaboration and inspiring stakeholders to work towards a vision. Her achievements have included project management of many State & Local Government Architectural projects, including the recent redevelopment of Gateway Heath in Mackay Street Wangaratta, and the community based Vision for Mount Buffalo as a destination.
